What is Transitional Housing?

Friendship House operates six houses for women, with or without children, who are employed, furthering their education, or involved in a daily Aftercare Program. These transitional housing programs are designed to support women who are serious about making changes in their lives. Many women come to us directly from drug/alcohol rehabilitation programs as well as from domestic violence shelters. The program operates in three stages and offers women up to one year of transitional housing and programming.

Epiphany House, our entry-level shelter, is located at 722 N. union St.  Upon successfully completing a residential recovery program (e.g. alcohol or drug rehab, the DOC's CREST or Village program, or the battered women's shelter), employable, homeless women are given four to six weeks of shelter and case management while they find their first job and demonstrate their willingness and desire for a long-term recovery program. Residents who follow the rules, work on their issues and find employment may graduate to Stage Two of the program.

Our Stage Two houses, Ashford House and Patterson House, are also located on Union Street in the Little Italy area of Wilmington. Residents may stay at these houses for 3-6 months (based on monthly renewal). If they have need of further housing and have successfully completed the entry level program program, they may move into either Palmer House or Concord House, our Stage Three houses,  for an additional 6-9 months.
